Community, Neurodiversity, and a Year-in-Review: The cometic rise of the Institute of Neurodiversity (ION)
by Silvan Ruthenberg, ION Global Lead
“Who knew that a simple idea, fuelled by the passion of a handful of individuals, would lead to globalising a movement that’s shaping the future of neurodiversity? Three years ago, the Institute of Neurodiversity ION was just a spark, an idea that seemed almost too ambitious to some. Fast forward, and here we are – active in over 35 countries, formally associated with the UN, and powered by a community as diverse as it is determined.
Oh, and did we mention the real engine behind it all? It’s the incredible female leaders (and aspiring ones) who’ve taken this mission and run with it – faster than any of us could have predicted!”
The Power of Community: Uniting Under a Shared Vision
The heart and soul of ION’s success is the people behind it—the communities across the globe that have come together to make neuroinclusion more than just a buzzword. It’s about real change, led by real people. Each person, from board chairs to students just discovering their voice, plays a role in this rapidly ever evolving story.
In the last year alone, we’ve seen incredible collaborations, from grassroots movements to institutional partnerships, all united by a shared vision and purpose:
Building a more inclusive world for neurominority individuals – and allies. We’ve heard stories of small, tight-knit communities that started by planting seeds of inclusion and have since grown into thriving ecosystems of support and innovation.
This sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than ourselves, has been key to ION’s rapid growth. And that’s the beauty of community—it transcends borders, cultures, and time zones, uniting us all in a shared vision.
Female Empowerment: The Driving Force Behind the Movement
Let’s take a moment to give credit where it’s due. While the entire ION community is a powerhouse, the role of female leaders cannot be overstated. From day one, women have been at the forefront of this movement, shaping its direction and driving its growth.
Female empowerment isn’t just a buzzword at ION—it’s a guiding principle. Women have brought creativity, empathy, and a fierce determination to the table, ensuring that neuroinclusion and inclusion are more than just concepts, but practices embedded in our daily lives.
And it’s not just established leaders—aspiring ones are stepping up too, eager to carve their own paths. ION has become a platform for mentorship, collaboration, and opportunity, empowering men and women alike to lead with confidence and compassion. Whether they’re organizing local events, leading international teams, or advocating for neurominority inclusion at the highest levels, female leaders are the backbone of this movement.
Going Global: From Local Roots to Global Impact
What started as a handful of passionate individuals has blossomed into a global force, with ION now active in over 35 countries. Our recent formal association with the United Nations Department of Global Communications has only amplified our efforts, giving us a platform to advocate for neurominority inclusion at the highest international stage.
But here’s the really exciting part: it’s often in the “Global South” where we’ve seen the most innovative and rapid advancements in neuroinclusion. Once the seeds of neuroinclusion are planted, communities in these regions are quick to nurture and grow them into fully-fledged movements. Whether it’s through local education, community programs, or business innovation, the “Global South” is showing the world what’s possible when inclusion becomes a priority.
In places like Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the stories of neurominority inclusion are not only inspiring but leading the way for more established countries to follow. It’s a testament to the power of innovation, determination, and community spirit.
A Call to Action: What’s Next?
So, what is next? Well, that’s where you come in. Whether you’re a student exploring new ideas, a professional looking to make a difference, or a leader seeking to create change, there’s a place for you at ION.
We’re not asking for superheroes (though, if you are one, we’d love to chat!). We’re looking for everyday people who believe in the power of community, inclusion, and the potential of neurominority individuals. We’ve come this far because people like you chose to take a step forward. Now, we’re inviting you to take the next step with us.
Join us in making the world a more inclusive place—one where everyone, regardless of their neurological wiring, can thrive.
The Journey Continues: Looking Ahead
Looking back at the past three years, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe at what we’ve achieved together. But this is just the beginning. The path ahead is bright, filled with opportunities to continue growing, learning, and making a difference.
Together, we’ve proven that when a community comes together under a shared purpose, the possibilities are endless. Here’s to many more years of growth, empowerment, and inclusion. Let’s keep building, keep advocating, and most importantly—let’s keep going, because the best is yet to come.
