International Declaration of Neurodiversity

“We should not fit our life to the demands of social conformity; we can’t find a model to live by from others, we can only find that within ourselves.”

“We do not think of the neurodiversity movement as one that seeks to integrate neurominority people into all the existing ways of living in the world as a human being.”

“There is a certain way of being human that is our way. We want to be free to live our life in our way, and not in imitation of other’s life.”

International Declaration of Neurodiversity

Five principles for a fairer, more inclusive world

The Institute of Neurodiversity (ION) has developed the International Declaration of Neurodiversity, setting out five fundamental principles to advance neuroinclusion, promote equality of opportunity and create a world where every mind is recognised, respected and valued.

The Declaration provides a framework for individuals, organisations, institutions and policymakers to recognise neurological differences, challenge discrimination and remove barriers to full participation in society.

The five principles focus on:

  1. Neurodiversity Literacy – Raising awareness and understanding of neurodiversity across society.

  2. Recognition – Recognising and supporting neurological differences to reduce discrimination.

  3. Supporting Difference – Ensuring societal structures and services accommodate different needs.

  4. Participation in Policy Development – Giving neurominorities a voice in shaping policies that affect their lives.

  5. Resource Allocation – Promoting equitable access to resources, services and opportunities.

Through this Declaration, ION calls on governments, businesses, educational institutions and communities worldwide to embrace these principles and turn awareness into meaningful action.

Different minds. Equal opportunities. A fairer future.

Every mind belongs.
